The whale shark is the largest living fish and the largest non-mammalian vertebrate. It can grow up to 40 feet long and weigh up to 20 tons. It has a mouth that can open up to 5 feet wide and a filter system that can strain plankton, small fish, and crustaceans. It lives in the tropical and temperate oceans, where it migrates long distances to find food and mates. It is harmless to humans and can even allow divers to swim alongside it.
