Your eyes stay closed for about 10% of your waking hours.
You might think that you only close your eyes when you blink or sleep, but that’s not true. You also close your eyes when you sneeze, cough, yawn, laugh, cry, or squint. These actions help lubricate, protect, and clean your eyes from dust, debris, and irritants. On average, you blink about 15 times per minute, which adds up to about 5.2 million times per year. Each blink lasts for about 0.3 seconds, which means you spend about 10% of your waking hours with your eyes closed.
