The enzymes that digest food will begin to digest the body itself after death.
When you are alive, your digestive system works hard to break down food into nutrients that can be absorbed by your body. It does this with the help of enzymes, which are molecules that speed up chemical reactions. However, when you die, these enzymes don’t stop working. Instead, they start to digest the cells and tissues of your own body. This process is called autolysis or self-digestion, and it is one of the first signs of decomposition after death.
