The Killer Bee

By Jeffrey W. Lotz, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Bugwood.org
A killer bee is a hybrid between a European honey bee and an African honey bee. It was created accidentally in Brazil in the 1950s when some African bees escaped from a research facility and mated with the local bees. The result was a more aggressive and defensive bee that could swarm and attack humans and animals. The killer bees spread rapidly across South and North America, posing a threat to native bees and pollination.
