BBC Wildlife Magazine

The hippopotamus is one of the largest and heaviest land animals in the world, and also one of the most unpredictable and territorial. It is found in the rivers and lakes of Africa, where it can grow up to 15 feet long and weigh up to 8,000 pounds. It has a massive head with a huge mouth that can open up to 180 degrees and reveal its sharp teeth and tusks that can bite through metal or bone. It can run up to 19 miles per hour on land and swim up to 5 miles per hour in water. It can attack anything that comes near its territory or offspring, including humans, crocodiles, lions, or other hippos. It can kill up to 500 people per year in Africa, making it one of the most dangerous animals on the continent.
